Have you ever talked to a younger version of yourself? It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie (or a little schizo).
A younger version of you - sent from the history to the present moment.
But it’s a highly effective psychotherapeutic method that allows you to understand yourself much better in depth.
I know that in the past, I invested too much in intellect alone and not enough in emotional development. Too much in optimizing applications and too little in understanding the operating system and the drivers beneath it (you see – that last sentence is the proof). ๐
Subconscious directs our entire lives
The scientific field that deals with the brain and psychological development suggests that the subconscious directs our entire lives. And most of the subconscious was either innate or learned during the early years of life.
It’s like the operating system on a computer, on which individual applications run. Or we can go a step deeper – the subconscious is like drivers loaded onto the computer, while the conscious mind is the operating system. Without functioning drivers, like those loaded onto a graphics card, the operating system itself doesn’t work.
So, what is this method of talking to a younger version of yourself - how and why should you have a conversation with the child within you?
The easiest way to do this is in a peaceful environment, during meditation, or another form of relaxation. Take your time, and be sure to turn off your phone. It’s good to go for a walk or run before using this technique, so you won’t find it difficult to sit or lie still. Also, it’s important not to force yourself to calm down.
Then, start talking to the child within you. Be an attentive conversationalist. Pay attention to their feelings, fears, desires, goals, and troubles.
Really listen to the child within you.
And why is this beneficial? Because having a conversation with the child within you will help you understand how your drivers work, in other words, your subconscious.
Because if you don’t understand your emotions, where they come from, and why fundamental fears are the way they are, life can be challenging.
Pitbull, in his song Back in Time:
“But to understand the future we have to go back in time.”
Because the less you understand how your past influences you, the harder it is to be successful in the present. And if you’re a prisoner of a negative past, which is nothing more than a memory, it can lead to a very sad life. In short, you mustn’t allow your negative past to determine your future.
Even a Latin proverb spoke about this – imperare sibi maximum imperium est. To rule oneself is the greatest empire.
The better you understand yourself and especially your fundamentals and deep emotiones, the easier it will be to succeed.
See you in a chat with your younger self.
