It all begins with a handshake. You make eye contact, extend your hand, offer a smile, and introduce yourself.

In an instant, a handshake establishes a connection of trust.

With this simple gesture, you elevate your interaction with another person to an entirely new level.

It’s essential that your handshake is appropriate—not limp like a dead fish nor excessively firm like a workout grip. It should be adjusted to the individual you’re greeting.

On one hand, it might seem amusing that I’m recording a video about the importance of handshakes. Unfortunately, in today’s world, it’s not uncommon for even the basics of etiquette to be overlooked.

Through conversations with people, I’ve come to realize that the decline of handshaking is rooted in fear. Yes, it takes a certain amount of courage and energy to approach a stranger or a potential client and offer a handshake.

From my experience as a business owner, I can attest that several clients have mentioned that the initial handshake, when we first met, left a immensely positive impression on them.

Additionally, I’d like to address the defensive posture, specifically crossed arms. I’ve noticed this particularly among younger professionals. I understand that it can be a reflexive defensive reaction, but nonverbally, this posture sends a strong message. Unless used deliberately and consciously, I recommend avoiding the crossed arms posture.

So, extend your hand, and offer it to all new acquaintances. It works like magic.
